Getting Started with Digital Accessibility
Based on your assessment, your organisation is at Level 1 of digital accessibility maturity. This represents the beginning of your accessibility journey.
Organisations at Level 1 typically:
- Are becoming aware of accessibility requirements and their importance
- Haven’t any formal processes in place for accessibility
- Find none or minimal accessibility activities happening
- Have very limited staff knowledge of accessibility principles
- Lack general awareness of standards or guidelines for digital products
Key Areas for Improvement
To progress toward higher maturity levels, focus on:
- Starting a discussion about the different reasons digital accessibility might be important to your organisation
- Preparing a basic accessibility statement for your website to show your intent
- Putting some basic customer contact channels in place specifically for people with disability
- Introducing initial disability awareness training in your organisation
- Encouraging the creation of accessible content, even if sporadic at this stage and appear unevenly across the organisation
- Incorporating basic accessibility testing in your development workflow
